The Dallas Cowboys quarterback advanced to open qualifying for the HP Byron Nelson Championship by shooting an even-par 72 in the pre-qualifier. Romo finished tied for 20th at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club's Hills Course on Tuesday, one of eight amateurs to advance to Monday's open qualifying.

"It's a good start," Romo said. "I've got to go a little lower next week. We hit it well enough that we'll have a chance. If we can make some of the putts that we missed today..."

In his bag, Romo carried a new Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Belly Putter recommended by a friend. He has used it only a week but didn't blame it for his 3-putt bogeys on Nos. 1, 9 and 10.

"It won't even be half," said Williams, who had the 12th-most drops in the league last year, according to STATS Inc. "Do you want to take that bet? I won't even come close. Promise you."

Williams has been catching 200 balls a week off the JUGS machine and an estimated 40 or 50 from Tony Romo. He is ready to prove that he is the same receiver he was in Detroit in 2006, when he caught 82 passes for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns.

Williams said he isn't going to give up his starting job easily, even though the Cowboys spent a first-round pick on Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant.

Romo advances to the open qualifying tournament Monday at qualifying tournament on Monday at Stonebridge Ranch.

"I hit the ball pretty good," Romo said. "There was a lot of wind, but I gave myself a chance by keeping the ball in the fairway."

The HP Byron Nelson Championship will be May 17-23 at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas.
