5/12/2010 5:46:00 PM - By CHAREAN WILLIAMS McKINNEY -- Tony Romo came; he golfed; he qualified.The Dallas Cowboys quarterback advanced to open qualifying for the HP Byron Nelson Championship by shooting an even-par 72 in the pre-qualifier. Romo finished tied for 20th at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club's Hills Course on Tuesday, one of eight amateurs to advance to Monday's open qualifying.
"It's a good start," Romo said. "I've got to go a little lower next week. We hit it well enough that we'll have a chance. If we can make some of the putts that we missed today..."
In his bag, Romo carried a new Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Belly Putter recommended by a friend. He has used it only a week but didn't blame it for his 3-putt bogeys on Nos. 1, 9 and 10.
"Sometimes I've got to overcome the short game, because when I go out, I go out and hit balls, and I go out to be able to hit the fairway with the tee ball," Romo said, "so I very seldom get a chance to work on my short game. It shows sometimes (more...)
